How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

It happened! You got your businesses’ website designed, developed and ready to go live out into the internet world and thrive!

For many companies, once it’s been created and launched, they kind of forget about their website, and redesigning it never pops into their mind.

Understandable. We know businesses are busy, and on top of everything else that comes with the day-to-day, a website redesign might be at the bottom of the priority list. (it might not even be on the list!)

Redesigning, however, is key to maintaining a successful website. So how often should you plan on redesigning your businesses’ website?

What is a website redesign?

Redesigning your site means completely overhauling your current website’s code, content, structure, and images. The whole shebang!

A successful website redesign should improve SEO, increase conversions and revenue, lower bounce rates, and improve the overall user experience.

Side note: a website refresh is different than a redesign. A refresh mainly includes changes like colors, copy, font sizes, etc.

Signs that it might be time for a website redesign

Whether you can relate to one or all of these, it’s time to redesign your businesses’ website.

Your website isn’t mobile-friendly

There’s no denying it. The majority of people use their smartphones to access information online. By “majority”, we mean over 4.3 billion worldwide

If the user experience is less than extraordinary on mobile (and desktop), you can almost guarantee your visitors will look elsewhere. AKA your competition. So a website redesign to optimize your mobile site should be a priority!

Take the mobile-friendly test to see how your site does!

Your site’s traffic and conversions aren’t adding up

Seeing high traffic, but low conversions? Are people coming to your site but leaving quickly? Is your bounce rate pretty high?

While your businesses’ website might be easy to find, it may not be giving visitors what they’re looking for. Whether it’s booking a call, buying an item, or scheduling an appointment, your website should always clearly communicate its CTAs to facilitate a satisfying user experience.

If this isn’t happening, your website’s not converting and most likely needs some redesign love

Your site’s not getting ANY traffic

On the contrary, if your website isn’t getting any traffic or you’ve noticed a significant decrease in traffic overall, something is seriously wrong.

It could be a lack of content optimization. Or maybe broken links and features and repetitive content has put you in Google’s dog house. Whatever the case, if the only visitors you are getting to your site are yourself, your best friend, and your significant other, it’s time for that redesign.

Your website looks old

Websites age. And unfortunately not like fine wine, but more like avocados. So an outdated site can cause huge issues because it’s often the first impression for your brand and company.

A whopping 94% of people admit that their first impressions of a businesses’ site are design-related. And if that doesn’t rock your world, this will. Studies show it takes around 0.05 seconds (50 milliseconds) for visitors to form an opinion and determine whether they’ll stay or leave your site.

No pressure, but if your website hasn’t had a makeover since the stone age (give or take 2019), you can bet visitors aren’t sticking around.

Your website doesn’t work the way it should

“The way it should” is subjective because every website functions differently for the most part. However, things like high-quality content that’s not easily accessible, 404 error pages, and pages that are slow to load are all excellent examples of a need for a redesign.

You’ve rebranded

We hate to state the obvious, but if you decide to rebrand your company, you should redesign your website to exemplify your new brand identity. It’s as simple as that.

Alright, but how often?

The generic answer? A good rule of thumb is to plan for a website redesign every two to three years. However, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. You should think about a redesign based on all the factors listed above.

And much like side parts, skinny jeans, and man buns, what’s “in” for website design can change fast. Therefore, it’s critical to keep a finger on the pulse regarding website design trends
